NINETEEN

Tulsi couldn’t believe it. After all she’d gone through, all her hopes and her conviction vanished in a heartbeat.

“Like hell you’re not part of the deal,” she asserted. “If you’re not part of the deal, I’m not going back.”

“Look around, Nymph,” Wreck said. “Any guy here could drag you back there. Kicking and screaming only makes the scene more real.”

“Damn you and more real,” she said. “Why would you go back?” Flipping around, she set her anger on Styx. “What the hell did you do?”

“Wasn’t me,” he said, holding up his hands in surrender. “When I drove in Merch’s garage to park up, your boyfriend and his buddies had just arrived back.”

That would’ve put them a good hour or two behind her, Svana, and Ripp. “What took you so long?” she asked Wreck.

He growled Ripp’s way. “We had a body to get rid of and a car to boost.”

So Teal really was dead. Ripp had been telling the truth. That gave him another reason to be reluctant about the handover. Delray would’ve seen Teal’s killer.

She frowned at Ripp. “If Delray knows you killed Teal, he’ll tell Merchant that you were the guy who kidnapped us.”

“I covered my face,” he said. “I’m not an idiot.”

Scrutinizing him and then Dam, she had to admit that they were similar in build, so they should be able to pull off the deception.

Tulsi looked to Styx again. “What does it matter that they were just arriving—”

“Wreck and I spoke before I saw Merchant.”

Damnit. That meant her love could alter the plan in any way he wanted to. She sighed. “And he told you he didn’t want to be part of the deal.”

“Helped,” Styx said. “He’s the only one Merch would’ve hesitated to give up… He’s got a real hard-on for your boyfriend.”

Tulsi knew that, though she didn’t like to think about it too much. “I won’t do it,” she said, shaking her head. “I won’t go back in there without knowing that you’re safe and you can’t be safe in there.”

Wreck didn’t flinch. His steely eyes remained fixed on hers. There wasn’t a glimmer of reluctance or contrition in them. “Before you started calling the shots, the plan was I’d die with Rowdy. Why do you think it changes because you’re in his place?”

Tulsi couldn’t work out which was more infuriating that he’d made a valid point she couldn’t argue or that no matter what she did, she wasn’t able to save his life.

Struggling to contain a growl of frustration, she turned to stalk away from the men. She paused, staring out at the columns in the yard. In the shadows of night, they were beginning to resemble towering headstones.

There were more than enough of them out there to account for every person Merchant employed. Tulsi’s declaration that she would consider suicide, but wouldn’t go down alone, had been prophetic. The problem: her strength came from knowing Wreck would be free. She would die for him, no questions asked, but taking him down with her… She hadn’t factored that in.
