NINETEEN
Tulsi couldnât believe it. After all sheâd gone through, all her hopes and her conviction vanished in a heartbeat.
âLike hell youâre not part of the deal,â she asserted. âIf youâre not part of the deal, Iâm not going back.â
âLook around, Nymph,â Wreck said. âAny guy here could drag you back there. Kicking and screaming only makes the scene more real.â
âDamn you and more real,â she said. âWhy would you go back?â Flipping around, she set her anger on Styx. âWhat the hell did you do?â
âWasnât me,â he said, holding up his hands in surrender. âWhen I drove in Merchâs garage to park up, your boyfriend and his buddies had just arrived back.â
That wouldâve put them a good hour or two behind her, Svana, and Ripp. âWhat took you so long?â she asked Wreck.
He growled Rippâs way. âWe had a body to get rid of and a car to boost.â
So Teal really was dead. Ripp had been telling the truth. That gave him another reason to be reluctant about the handover. Delray wouldâve seen Tealâs killer.
She frowned at Ripp. âIf Delray knows you killed Teal, heâll tell Merchant that you were the guy who kidnapped us.â
âI covered my face,â he said. âIâm not an idiot.â
Scrutinizing him and then Dam, she had to admit that they were similar in build, so they should be able to pull off the deception.
Tulsi looked to Styx again. âWhat does it matter that they were just arrivingââ
âWreck and I spoke before I saw Merchant.â
Damnit. That meant her love could alter the plan in any way he wanted to. She sighed. âAnd he told you he didnât want to be part of the deal.â
âHelped,â Styx said. âHeâs the only one Merch wouldâve hesitated to give up⦠Heâs got a real hard-on for your boyfriend.â
Tulsi knew that, though she didnât like to think about it too much. âI wonât do it,â she said, shaking her head. âI wonât go back in there without knowing that youâre safe and you canât be safe in there.â
Wreck didnât flinch. His steely eyes remained fixed on hers. There wasnât a glimmer of reluctance or contrition in them. âBefore you started calling the shots, the plan was Iâd die with Rowdy. Why do you think it changes because youâre in his place?â
Tulsi couldnât work out which was more infuriating that heâd made a valid point she couldnât argue or that no matter what she did, she wasnât able to save his life.
Struggling to contain a growl of frustration, she turned to stalk away from the men. She paused, staring out at the columns in the yard. In the shadows of night, they were beginning to resemble towering headstones.
There were more than enough of them out there to account for every person Merchant employed. Tulsiâs declaration that she would consider suicide, but wouldnât go down alone, had been prophetic. The problem: her strength came from knowing Wreck would be free. She would die for him, no questions asked, but taking him down with her⦠She hadnât factored that in.
